Project Management Competency Assessment
The first step in a Project Management Competency Development initiative is to assess where the organization currently stands. In this offering, PM Power leverages PMI’s Organizational Project Management Maturity Model (OPM3®) and Project Management Competency Development Framework (PMCDF®) for assessing competency at organizational and individual levels respectively.

PM Power typically gathers data from the following sources for the assessment, tailored to the organization’s context:

  • Customer feedback (organizational level or individual level) specific to project management
  • Assessments of individual PM performance in a project by his reporting manager
  • Inputs from project team members on how the project was led by the project manager
  • Self-assessment of the project manager based on what works for him and where he needs help
Analyzing the raw data and making inferences about an individual’s development needs is a somewhat tricky process and that is where the vast experience of PM Power’s consultants is brought in to play. Very often, project incidents may point to certain development needs at first look, but it is important to analyze root causes that may point to a completely different development need. For example, an apparent development need in project risk management may actually stem from poor communication or poor stake holder ownership, which are completely different development needs.

PM Power’s assessment methodology brings incisive analysis and mapping to the fore so that developmental needs for individual PMs are precisely identified.

The individual development needs, once identified and agreed with the individual project manager and his reporting manager, form the basis for a custom competency development plan comprising developmental tasks (on-the-job & otherwise), focused training and coaching support.

Photo by Nathan Bingle on Unsplash Some time back I wrote a blog on scope management and its relevance in agile projects. A few days later, a friend stopped by for a chat and gave me a shocker, saying “why are you writing about such dated stuff like scope management?...
